CODE NAME: PAPA DEDICATION
Where in the world?
We hope you’ll come along as Papa reminisces about his unique journey.
If so, here are a few of the places we’ll visit:
In the US: Internationally:
New York Greece
Washington, DC Netherlands
Russia / USSR
We dedicate this book to all the wonderful people who have worked so hard to make this world a better and safer place... and especially to the many who have given their lives or their good health while doing it.
"Who'd have thought a bright, but fairly ordinary young man from middle class America who got just above average grades, dated the same girl throughout high school and went to church most Sundays, would grow up to eventually head a very secretive band of brave individuals—both men and women—who regularly put their lives on the line because they wanted to protect the rest of you. Yet that's what we did, often sacrificing our personal lives (four marriages for me, all in the book) and our health (countless broken bones, major surgeries, even death) to do it.
Meanwhile you're just going to have to call me "Papa" like everyone else around the globe has through most of those wildly unpredictable and dangerous years."
Papa always called the C-130 the workhorse of their team, taking them safely all over the world to accomplish their goals. As you'll learn in the book, sometimes they lost use of an engine, sprouted a gas leak or had to land without lighting due to the secrecy of the mission. Yet these no-frills aircraft made so many important missions possible whether Papa and his team landed safely or parachuted from them into a mission site.
The team in the USSR, which eventually became Russia, thoroughly appreciated Papa and his team's help—and the feeling was mutual. Above is an ornate Russian flask given by the Russian team leader to Papa and filled with a very fine vodka after the American team's successful effort on a big problem.
